Montreal-Mirabel International Airport (IATA: YMX, ICAO: CYMX) is situated in the city of Mirabel, approximately 39 kilometers northwest of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Originally conceived in the 1960s as a solution to Montreal's burgeoning air traffic, Mirabel Airport was envisioned to become a major international gateway in North America. It officially opened its doors in 1975, amidst grand expectations for future expansion.

However, Montreal-Mirabel never fully realized its ambitious potential. Despite its sprawling 15,000-acre campus and the capacity to handle extensive traffic, the airport struggled with low passenger numbers and high operational costs. These challenges led to the redirection of most international flights back to Montreal’s other major airport, Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (IATA: YUL), by 2004.

Today, Montreal-Mirabel functions largely as a cargo and manufacturing airport. It does not operate passenger flights, but it remains a critical hub for air freight services and aerospace industries. The airport's surrounding area has been repurposed for various industrial and commercial activities, including aircraft testing and maintenance.

In terms of statistics, Montreal-Mirabel handled approximately 30,000 aircraft movements in recent years, predominantly from cargo operations. Despite its decline as a passenger hub, the airport maintains its relevance in the Canadian aviation sector through continued cargo services and its support for the local aerospace economy.
